Samuel Gomper

Occupation: American Cigar Maker

Position on Issue: Annexing should happen because of being a Socialist and believing that people should govern themselves and this is what Gomper disagreed on. He also was for the enlargement of industrialism which is annexing any land would lead to. He also wanted to improve the economy which annexing would accomplish.

Reasoning of Interest:

- leader of AFL that promotes industrial improvement
- disagreed socialist beliefs that said people should have self government which annexing disagrees with
- focused on economics not politics so annexing for economic gains
- wanted larger trade and opening up a port in Asia would allow greater trading
